First Game Jam - Chill Jam. Submitted
The themes that inspired me to come up with a one day idea for this jam were uʍop-ǝpısdn, winter, and robot takeover. I also used the Gameplay restrictions🎮 one button and platformer without jumping.
“in the dark” was an inspiration for setting it in a cave, but the implementation of darkness never happened.
Upside down + no jumping spoke to me as an infinite runner where you control a spider. The 3D vision for it, which is beyond my skills at this time, was to allow you to crawl down the cave walls to avoid the robots. I had to scale it down to just a 2D side scroller.
I wasn’t certain if I would make an attempt at this, there was just 9 hours left in the Jam. My son heard the game idea and created a spider sprite for me before he went to bed. His sprite did not include a top-down view, so wall crawling was out. I didn’t want to change his sprites.
The background is created in Tiled. The robot is from https://laplas-games-inc.itch.io/asset-pack
I’m sure the spirit of no-jumping is violated by this runner because it is functionally a jump but the spider is decending on its thread and climbing back up. Upside down :)
